While I was waiting in line to introduce myself to Mr. McAfee, I eavesdropped on a conversation he was having with the young woman in front of me. She gave her age as 28 and said she had recently been hired to coordinate social media at a real estate company where her bosses were mostly in their 50s. She was clearly demoralized and frustrated.

BBC director of future media and technology Erik Huggers has confirmed that the next iteration of BBC iPlayer will integrate with social media networks. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph , Huggers said that the BBC has already agreed partnerships deals with Facebook, Twitter and Bebo. All three social networks will be embedded on the catchup platform when the iPlayer 3.0 beta goes live. "We are close to launching the third version of the iPlayer in beta which will have many more social functions embedded within it," said Mr Huggers.  

It's March Madness time and once again, millions of office workers are watching the games online from behind their desks at work. And in between games, they're comparing scores with family and friends on Facebook, Twitter and email. But if you're watching from work, you're taking a big chance. and disciplining those employees for inappropriate use.  

With Avatar becoming the most commercially successful movie in history, it seems odd that the platform which would have inspired much of the film seems to have had its day with the online user. Then again, the Lawnmower man was no advert for virtual reality which did okay for a while. In terms of it as a social media platform, it was always going to be far more complicated to create and maintain a virtual avatar than updating and maintaining a Facebook or Twitter account.

Africa has the lowest number of internet users in the world, a problem that has prevented its inhabitants from enjoying the benefits of digital media. Participants at the Pan African Media Conference heard that the continent's internet penetration was a meager four percent, with the rest of the world taking the lion's share of 96 percent. Google Kenya Business Development Manager, Isis Nyongó, told a roundtable discussion on new media that there was need to increase Africa's internet penetration to allow more people benefit from the use of internet.
